Description of Services

The State's Attorney is the legal representative of the citizens of Menard County in criminal, traffic and juvenile related matters.  If someone believes he or she is a victim of a crime, a report should be made to the police as soon as possible.  The police submit a report to the state's attorney's office for review.  The State's Attorney protects elderly persons from exploitation and abuse and prosecutes those who victimize the elderly.  The State's Attorney represents victims of domestic abuse.  Criminal cases are divided into felony matters which may result in incarceration in the penitentiary and misdemeanor cases which may result in confinement in the county jail.  In juvenile matters, the State's Attorney files civil and criminal actions against guardians and parents who abuse or neglect young people and children.  Delinquency actions are filed against minors who are accused of committing crimes.

In civil law matters, the State's Attorney is the attorney for county elected officials and department heads.  As counsel for county run services, such as Sunny Acres Nursing Home, the Menard County Health Department and Highway Department, advise is given and any regulatory actions are reviewed and the county defended as necessary.  The State's Attorney is prohibited by law from representing private citizens in civil law matters such as divorce, child custody, landlord/tenant law and contract disputes.
